Flood Recovery Update
August 17, 2018

The Houghton County Road Commission (HCRC) would like to thank everyone for their patience as we recover and continue to repair the roads damaged by the flood. This week we met with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) , Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The HCRC is working directly with FHWA and MDOT to address the repairs to the HCRC’s Federal Aid System. These are our primary roads such as: Airport Park Road, Baltic/Onkalos Corner Road, Bootjack Road, Boston Road, Chassell/Painesdale Road, Houghton Canal Road, Industrial Drive, Lake Annie Road, Larson Road, Liminga Road, Lower Forsman Road, Obenhoff Road, Paradise Road, Salo Road, Superior Road and Tapiola Road. Design is nearing completion on several of these roads and will be going out for bids in the near future. Once timelines are more available/accurate we will post updates.

The HCRC is working with FEMA to address the repairs to the HCRC’s Local System. There were over 100 roads affected from the flood with varying degrees of damage. The HCRC has bid out the installation of the larger culverts on Cloverland Road, Lower Worham, Cemetery Road, Woodside Road and Pontiac Road. Work should begin on these culverts between the end of August to the end of September. The other road damage is continuing to be reviewed by HCRC and FEMA, as more details are finalized we will be posting updates.

In addition to these projects the HCRC will be working with the State to address the damage caused by the July 12th flood under Section 19 Disaster Assistance. More information on these repairs should be available next week.

Unfortunately not all the road damage will be able to be repaired this year. We will try to complete as many repairs as possible and stabilize areas that will have to wait until next construction season. Once again, we thank you for your patience and assure you that we are doing everything we can to expedite the repairs.
